How much longer, Lord?

But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk not faint. Isaiah 40:31

I suppose that for as long as we live, there will always be something that we have to wait for. Whether it’s waiting to get pregnant, or waiting for the baby to pop out, or maybe it’s waiting for a promotion at work… Or for that university admission to fall in place. There’ll always be something to wait for. 

As I look back to the first days of the year when I eagerly wrote down my goals and desires for the year, and then forward to where I am now. I wonder how prepared I was to wait for the fulfilment of God’s promises. By all natural appearances, some of those things should have happened by now (and they have). “But what about the rest, Lord?”…I stop to ask. “I’m with you in this, is the quiet response”. No timelines, or instructions to follow, just that promise. 

God is sovereign, and for those of us whose lives are fully committed to Him, we must come to terms with this reality. When I call Him my LORD, I sometimes wonder if I fully grasp the meaning of this word. It means I’m putting my life, my dreams and goals under His authority. Waiting on God has many faces, for you it’s probably something else but I think the bottom line is the same for everyone. 

The Bible admonishes us to follow the example of those who through faith and patience obtained promises. 

When I think about my faith in this season, I’m reminded of different situations in the Bible when Jesus described the faith of people. Some had no faith, others had little faith and some had great faith. The truth is sometimes my disposition and the words that I’ve uttered have not exactly been in alignment with what I’m hoping for especially in those moments when I’m just tired of waiting for the answer. But even in those moments, I have experienced the timely encouragement of the Holy Spirit. 

It doesn’t always feel like it but I’m convinced that I’m right where God wants me. He’s still the fourth within the fire. He’s still good, and He’s ever faithful. Even when our circumstances seem to say otherwise, He is still the God who makes  way in the wilderness. God is doing a new thing, even in dry places. There’s an oasis nearby that He has prepared for us to enjoy. 

One thing that really helps to see better is gratitude. For all that we have seen and for all that we are yet to see, and most importantly for who He is. So as dear children of God, let us draw near to Him even as we seek to know His plans and His thoughts towards us. Such a joy to know that they are all good! (Jeremiah 29:11).
